well, we are home. in our new home. it’s not so sweet yet though. which i’m sure is pretty typical of a move. leading up to the move was non-stop chaos. this past weekend after our closing was non-stop chaos as we tried to get things done like fix ugly paint treatments (plaster on the wall, not just sponge paint? thanks a bunch), paint and build a wall. all while staying at my parents, going back and forth to our house and having most our stuff in the city. moving day today was non-stop chaos, especially when all our stuff did not fit in the frickin moving truck! so yea, there’s that. we have to go all the way back downtown tomorrow with two cars to hopefully get the rest. meanwhile i have never been so tired in my life, so i’m laying in bed (on the floor) writing this, staring at the mess around me, not knowing where my clothes are, where my bath towel is, where henry’s diapers are…instead of organizing and trying to find things that i may need soon, unless i want to be a dirty, naked mom with a diaper-less baby. seriously, this place is chaos.

i will be here trying to make sense of this place and all our stuff, for like, ever. which is made even harder when i can’t move anything into the first floor except the kitchen and laundry room since we are getting our floors redone next week, and god forbid we have to move things twice in less than two weeks.

someday i will share the rest of the house as promised, too. and plan henry’s party. and paint this entire house.

moving sucks,
justine

edit: how could I forget? a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge (huge) shout out to my parents who are the best parents ever and help moving and renovations not be so sucky by doing tons of work (building a wall, drywalling, mudding, sanding, painting), cooking us dinner (and breakfast, and lunch) and most importantly, taking care of our little man henry.

moving {lessons learned}

the move ryan and i made one week ago was what i call our first ever “big move”. i’ve moved to college and back before, but that was nothing but a car load (or two) of small stuff. i also wouldn’t classify us moving from my parents house into our condo as a “big move” (though it seemed like it at the time), since our biggest item was a couch we purchased the night before — no mattress, no bazillion kitchen items received (and appreciated and used!) from our wedding, no table, no buffet, no bar, and so forth. all we needed was a couple cars and a flatbed trailer attached to my parent’s suv. we also didn’t have to spruce up the place we were leaving except to pack up our goods (although i’m sure i still have stuff at my parents). so being that i was a virgin big mover, i learned a couple things along my journey…

1. you have more stuff than you think (~50 pint glasses and 20+ wine glasses? is that necessary? apparently yes. what does that say about us??)

2. it will take longer than you planned (we had the truck to our condo by 7:30 am and planned on leaving for the new place at 10am. it was more like 11:30am. and the truck was due back at uhaul by 1pm.  i still don’t know how we unloaded the truck in an hour but we did, for a 12:58pm return.)

3. going on vacation after you move is a better idea than before you move (though there was no getting around that, and the vacay did offer a temporary respite from stress)

4. boxes are expensive, since you need so many of them. at home depot they ranged from about79 cents for a small and $1.40 for a large (approximate). times that by, oh, 30, and that’s a good chunk of change just for boxes that i would prefer to spend elsewhere. borrow boxes from others who recently moved (thanks grandma!) or go to the grocery store to ask for boxes. and if you know you’re moving again soon, find someplace to store all the boxes you just used (we know we’ll most likely move within 2 years, so ours will be saved in the basement).

5. if you need to make the place presentable after you move, do not save patching holes and repainting until last. even though your house will feel completely barren without frames hanging on the walls, removing them, repairing any holes and repainting should be first on your list.

this, of course, was learned the hard way. the night before we left for vacation, i gathered all our leftover paint to cover the patched holes. in the paint for the largest wall in our condo, i found this:

empty

no paint!

bad label

faded label!

my heart palpitated. then i ignored the problem and started with the other rooms i had paint for (the bathroom was eh because of a larger patch job, but the bedroom turned out fine). then i sucked it up and went to home depot for a color match. guess what? they can not match every color (lesson #5b). the original paint was from menards, so i headed over there and got what looked like spot-on color. i got home, painted my hole patches and got concerned about the color. we gave it through our vacation to dry, but the results were not good.

wall

yikes. lesson #5c: if you have lots  of (or larger) wall patches to repaint, plan on repainting the whole wall. which is what i did. at 8pm the day i got back from vacation, the night before i moved (after going to the store to buy another quart).

6. it doesn’t end once you pack it all up and move. you will then spend just as much time (or more since there’s no deadline) unpacking, living among boxes, and eating take out every night.

7. label every box very specifically.  though it might take you a bit to find the box labeled “toilet paper” in your cardboard jungle, at least you know the box when you find it, instead of opening and digging through 30 boxes as you try not to pee your pants.

8. a hidden expense in moving is food. you try to eat up as much in your pantry, fridge and freezer as you can before moving so you have to move as little as possible. once you move, you have to replenish the groceries – we have yet to make it to the grocery store (and costco) but anticipate our grocery bill to be few hundred dollars. eating is a necessity (unfortunately, otherwise i wouldn’t be on a diet because i would be skinny minny already) and you don’t have time to get to the grocery store , and even if you did, you can’t cook because stuff is covering every surface in your kitchen and your pans aren’t yet unpacked, so you will find yourself eating out or getting take out every night, and when you add up a week or two worth of eating out every night (and for lunch), you’re reminded even more how much you like cooking at home.

9. even though you’re moving on to something bigger and better, it is sad to see your first place empty (and the crooked blind will still bug the crap out of you).

all moved out

they’re not revolutionary, but just what i learned in my journey from big move virgin to big move veteran. do you have any moving tips? (i should have asked before my move, yes?)

we survived {aka it’s time to shop now}

we survived our move! there was a few times throughout the two day process of finishing packing, painting, cleaning and actually moving that i wasn’t sure we would survive. but thanks to our determination and help from family and friends (they were lifesavers. thank you jarrett, jordan, mom and mulcahy), we did.

now that we are in our new place, we have a mile-long to buy/do list. first and foremost is to actually start to unpack and organize (so we don’t have to look through 5 rooms and 20 boxes to find something), though as you’ll see below there’s a bit of storage items needed which makes it more difficult.

here’s the (buying) plan, by room:

living room:
-tv wall mount
-drapes (diy) and/or blinds
-new couch (hopefully in the next couple months)
-make large ottoman to replace coffee table
-new rug

dining room:
-drapes (diy) and/or blinds
-ryan to build farmhouse table (hopefully soon)
-chairs for table (looking for affordable brushed aluminum or ghost chairs and faux-eames plastic molded  armchairs)
-chandelier (that we can take with us to our future place)
-rug
-shelving (?)

farmhouse table inspiration{farmhouse table inspiration}

master bedroom:
-king mattress (coming tuesday. little worried about how they’ll get it in, but that’s their job, right?)
-king bed frame
-sheets
-down alternative comforter (pesky allergies) (just ordered from overstock. hopefully will be here soon)
-duvet cover
-quilt/blanket
-pillows
-bed skirt
-make headboard (envisioning tufted velvet)
-dresser (omg we can fit a dresser!)
-closet organization (shoe racks, small dresser/shelving?)
-waste basket
-tv wall mount
-new nightstand(s) (not sure if two will fit with new bed)
-darkening shade

west elm sheets{i can’t stop thinking about these gray sheets. 99% chance i’m buying}

guest bedroom:
-new sheets
-tv
-waste basket
-possible dresser
-closet organization (shoe racks, shelving?)

kitchen:
-dresser to refurbish as island
-armoire to refurbish or dresser to refurbish with floating shelves above
-pots/pans/dishes organizer for cabinet

dresser into kitchen island{kitchen island inspiration}

bathrooms (omg we have two!):
-shower curtain rod
-shower curtain and liner
-shower hanging caddy
-bath mat for 2nd bath
-storage containers for inside sink cabinet
-baskets for under sink cabinet
-new towels

office (/hopefully craft room):
-unknown/don’t have time to think about now

miscellaneous:
-light bulbs (there are missing bulbs in every light fixture, and not all are energy efficient)
-coat rack
-laundry drying rack (actually have room for one in the creepy basement where the washer/dryer is)
-new vacuum (hopefully)
-frames for large gallery wall, somewhere
-brakes for car (not home related, but the car is needed to buy the above and it’s almost undriveable now)

the bank account is and will be taking a beating (especially after vacation and having to eat out a lot lately because the kitchen is filled with boxes and we have no food)? we are planning on buying the larger items for cheap (dressers from flea markets/craigslist, mattress from overstock) or making them ourselves (large ottoman, king headboard and dining room table), for the most part, so that will help. and even though i’m impatient, i know it can’t all be done at the snap of my fingers, so that also helps ease the cash flow.

the brakes for the car are ryan’s most immediate priority.  my most immediate priority is a king-sized bed frame and new bedding by tuesday, followed by the the kitchen storage solutions, as we have such limited cabinet space there’s literally nowhere to unpack things.

to recap, here’s where we’re at: bleeding money (but for a good cause – decorating our place!) living in a cardboard jungle. spending 20 minutes looking for something, every. single. time. we need something. eating out (and thus gaining weight due to poor nutrition and no time to exercise). having to watch tv in the bedroom because 1. the couch is in the dining room 2. the tv is in the living room, on the floor and 3. the only dish network remote that doesn’t work is for that tv. i’m going nuts. but i have 3 bedrooms, 2 bathroms, a kitchen, dining room and living room to go nuts in!

i’m looking forward to showing the progress we make of turning the apartment into a home, and the projects that accompany it…so stay tuned (slowly!).

weekend recap {cardboard jungle}

the last weekend between me and the beach is over! it was a busy, productive one. lots and lots of packing, patching holes and getting a window fixed. it wasn’t all work and no play though, we did find time to enjoy a delicious al fresco dinner saturday night at an italian restaurant a short walk away (and i proceeded to leave my amazing leftovers at the restaurant. devastation).

this is the most boring weekend recap…sorry. i did take photos though to show the state of my home:

patches{the downside of gallery walls? patching the holes.}

ghetto window{our ghetto window until wednesday}

no lid{the lids are packed}

such a mess

such a mess ii{heaven help me}

scary porch{hold me. i’m frightened. such a chaotic mess with a whole lotta crap.}

despite all those boxes, i still feel like there’s so. much. to. do. i’m not enjoying the cardboard jungle we’re living in and will be so glad when our move is over. and maybe then i’ll have more exciting things to share, huh?

did you have a much more exciting weekend than i? please share so i can live vicariously through you…
